I have always had this thought that I believe has never been specifically addressed. Why is it that the students at Hogwarts are living in the past (Quill-and-Ink, Candles, etc.)? I realize that all electronic objects don't work at Hogwarts, but still, don't you think that something would have been invented that would put the students and staff at Hogwarts a little past the eighteenth century? Reply with your thoughts.

I definitely agree with you and have been wondering about that too... it should be interesting to read what others have to say about this because I think many of us have already pondered this question but haven't told anyone our answers... Awesome Topic!

uh no because its the way its been done forever and i dont think that will change and how do you pu electric wireing into a stone wall?

They wouldn't need electronics, magic could replace any electronics, but yeah, I mean wouldn't they at least use pens? Or use texting instead of owls, it's much faster.

I've always wondered about this...I think it may have something to do with the time period they closed themselves off from the muggle world. The Statute of Secrecy went into effect in 1692. Before that they could venture out among muggles without hiding themselves. Of course, most of them wouldn't have wanted to deal with the "lowly" muggles, but living along side each other meant they were exposed to their ways of life. After the statute went into effect, it probably took a while for the witches and wizards to actually do what they were told, but after that they lived in a separate world. Because they lived off of magic, they probably didn't need to "advance" themselves as much as the muggles did. So while they did gain knowledge, wizarding advancement was more along the lines of innovative potions and more comfortable broomsticks. Muggles advanced their own way, bringing better technology around. So the wizarding world is accustomed to the quills and candles of the late 17th/early 18th century because that was the last time they were truly exposed to muggle life. Only muggleborns would know what pens and electronics are, because muggles were the ones to invent them. The wizarding world probably didn't see the need to create more efficient writing utensils, etc. Because if you think about it, many aspects of wizarding life in general aren't very "modern" the way we think of it.

Wow. I thought waaay too much about that. But yeah...just a theory. I'm going to go get a life now :D

I think magic just prooves all technological advances obsolete. Why would you have a lamp when you could just flick your wand and have a candle on? Why would you need the internet to comunicate, when there are other easier, more dependable methods of comunication (like sticking your head in the fire)? Why in the world would you stay inside and play Halo when you coluld fly around on a broom? Yes, technology MAY make life a little easier for Wizards, but the more involved they are in Muggle life and technology, the more likely they would be found out.

Just imagine a Muggle repairman going to put eletrical wires into the Weasly houshold. Yeah. Being uninvolved in the workings of Muggles can just make life easier for the Wizards.

Oh yeah, Marie, having a life is WAY overrated.
